What’s up, y’all? I’m sorry I’ve been MIA for the past few weeks. My mother underwent foot surgery on Apr. 1, and man…her recovery has been a serious uphill battle. I had to pop back in here to give the late great DMX some love after he passed on, but other than that, I haven’t really had time to write anything. There’s been a ton of topics that I wanted to touch on this month, but between working overtime and helping Mom out, my energy has just gone kaput. Thankfully, Mom’s slowly getting on the mend—we’re still trying to get up that hill—and I have a small increment of time to celebrate the fifth anniversary of my blog!
I realized in mid 2009 that I was meant to be a writer, but by the time 2016 rolled around, my career still wasn’t where I wanted it to be. One morning in April, I was lying in bed, and the idea hit me…what about an entertainment blog? Back in those days, I’d spend hours giving my opinions on movies and TV shows on the now-defunct IMDB.com message boards, and I’d always write my ass off about my favorite celebrities and other topics on various websites. With an entertainment blog, I could do the same thing I always did, and elevate my writing career at the same time! The next day, I visited WordPress.com and signed up for the cheapest website package they had—I upgraded later—and despite being sick with a stomach bug, I sat down and wrote my very first blog post, “Empire Ain’t What It Used to Be.” I wish I could show you guys what my blog looked like in its early stages, but all I have is a random screenshot of me editing a Game of Thrones review/recap (I had a few editing screenshots taken back in those days, thanks to my fat fingers moving too quickly across the keys). In all honesty, the blog had a blue and white theme during its early years, so it didn’t look too much different than the editing page.
Insights from a Southern Girl evolved little by little in the course of five years, and I’ve loved watching it grow. I only wish I could provide even more material on this blog, but sometimes my schedule, family obligations, and my body have other plans. No matter what, I will continue to come here and provide my thoughts on all things entertainment, be it TV shows, movies, music, etc. For those of y’all that have been rockin’ with me from the beginning, thank you so much for continuing to be a member of Insights from a Southern Girl. To my new members, I thank you for joining my blog and I hope you stay along for the ride! I plan on writing some new posts on various subject in the coming weeks, and the final season of Pose will be premiering in the next few days, so keep your eyes open for some possible articles about that as well! I love you all, and here’s to another five years! 🎈🎉🎊🎆✨
